WATERAGRI partner VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. developing solution Bio-based nutrient-collecting membranes in their laboratories. This solution is dedicated to recover nutrient from agricultural runoff. VTT modify bio-based membranes for efficient capturing of phosphate, nitrate and potassium ions from water to bring the recovered nutrients back as fertilizer.
Bio-based nutrient-recovery membranes are made from nanocellulose which is sustainable material sourced from plants, hence it is recyclable, biodegradable and non-toxic. Within WATERAGRI project, VTT is investigating routes towards enhancing nanocellulose surface charge by chemical modifications.
Farmers can benefit from this solution because they can recycle nutrients and reduce their costs. In addition, this solution can improve drinking water quality in general.
