WATERAGRI’s partner project OPTAIN (OPtimal strategies to retAIN and re-use water and nutrients in small agricultural catchments across different soil-climatic regions in Europe) proposes a social and scientific journey towards the increase and better understanding of the multiple benefits of Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRMs). This is necessary to better adapt to extreme events that exacerbate conflicts between agricultural water uses and other human and environmental demands for water.

To achieve this, the project elaborates from the current state of knowledge, the experience of stakeholders from 14 case studies involved in the project and innovative scientific modelling and optimization approaches. The project aims on the one hand at identifying efficient and easy-to-implement techniques for the retention and reuse of water and
nutrients in small agricultural catchments across Boreal, Continental, and Pannonian regions.

Another important aim of the project is the optimization of the spatial allocation and combination of NSWRM, based on environmental and economic sustainability indicators.
OPTAIN and WATERAGRI teams have formed cross-project working groups as a vehicle for close co-operation. WATERAGRI is very strong on innovative applications in the field, whereas OPTAIN provides excellent modelling work and stakeholder involvement.

Working together will allow us to:

  • Learn from each other
  • Improve our output
  • Save financial resources
  • Maximize impact for the benefit of the agricultural and water industries.
