Membrane and Activated Biochar. VTT has developed a new nanocellulose-based membrane. The ability of this membrane to capture nutrients involves a surface modification, which has been carried out only at lab scale at VTT and for this particular application, we have shown the experimental proof of concept. Literature (not by VTT) indicates that surface modified nanocellulose films are able to efficiently capture nutrients; so the development work should be executable. With numerous surface-tailoring options, the membrane has great potential for selective nutrient capture as well. The production method is green and up-scalable and can thus be produced in various scales and configurations. The biological structure opens the possibility to use the nutrient-rich membrane material after recovery for soil amendment and/or fertilisation.
