The farm comprises 16 ha of pasture with sprinkler irrigation for cattle grazing and 50 ha irrigated arable land at a nitrate-sensitive area (based on the European guidelines). The WATERAGRI results will enhance irrigation sustainability by reducing water discharge to both groundwater and surface water and will contribute to the reduction of artificial fertilizers to adapt to climate change by a reduction of available conventional water resources.
WATERAGRI solutions applied at the case study location:
- ULUND and USAL are providing a Dewaterability Estimation Test and UNIDEB is testing it with fermentation sludge, and possible utilization for soils amended by water retainer.
- In the task period, a model developer from UNIDEB is working together with FZJ for an extended period contributing to the development of physical-based modelling. This facilitates the development of real-time irrigation scheduling (AGRICOLUS) with the model CLMParFlow.
- Additionally, water samples are taken from the Hungarian case study site to support the development of microfluidics technology.
