WATERAGRI will develop and assess two low-cost, bio-inspired drainage systems to capture nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff. We aim to develop a system that provides physical sediment, nutrient and water retention as well as storage and further metabolisation by soil biology and plants. This will be achieved by combining the findings of the solution of biochar for nutrient and water retention with ALCNs expertise on constructed wetlands and using various structural and biological materials. The recovered nutrients can be recirculated by either using the loaded biochar as fertilizer or direct use of the produced biomass. The systems will be validated as small-scale prototypes in a relevant agricultural environment. Moreover, WATERAGRI will explore to what extent active drainage management (e.g., closing drains during drought conditions) can improve the efficiency of irrigation and fertigation.
